She now lives in hot, dry Arizona where wet clothes dry in about 30 seconds. But she has to hide her hanging clothes behind a retractable bamboo screen on the porch so the neighbors don't report her.Thomas Hogglestockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14284352537015457974noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135643188634165782.post-53605420725604103422011-08-11T23:59:40.690-07:002011-08-11T23:59:40.690-07:00p.s Also, am going to copy this post on to my blog...p.s Also, am going to copy this post on to my blogs sometime. And I love clotheslines.

Though I dry clothes inside my house on a clothes - drying - rack (with the fan on during the monsoon months), that's only because there are too many pigeons around that sit on anything you hang outside and pee-poo on it. Not on my freshly washed clothes !

I actually like looking up at buildings that have lots of clothes hanging outside - it makes for such a colourful mosaic. Next time you are on the highway, look at all the houses some distance away and tell me that the clothes hanging there do not add to their friendly appeal.

Zenentropyhttp://entropymuse.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135643188634165782.post-749999303123064972011-08-11T17:25:09.261-07:002011-08-11T17:25:09.261-07:00Jai Ho!Jai Ho!Ravi Krishnanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13780471809897495223noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135643188634165782.post-55752545998744038072011-08-11T17:14:04.557-07:002011-08-11T17:14:04.557-07:00This article reminded me of how my life has improv...This article reminded me of how my life has improved over the years, at least in this aspect :).

My earliest personal experience was when the clothesline was inside my hostel room! The extra moisture this added to the already high humidity in Chennai was not pleasant. Then I moved to Mumbai where the clothesline was outside in the balcony, reducing its impact from physical discomfort to an eye sore. Then came the move to the West with its abundant supply of dryers and electricity.

At the risk of attracting flames, let me say this- I love not having to deal with the clothesline anymore. Energy conservation be damned!Smoke+Mirrorshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16109716846091428406noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135643188634165782.post-90865451722466975572011-08-11T16:00:59.115-07:002011-08-11T16:00:59.115-07:00Turns out driers aren't that common in London ...Turns out driers aren't that common in London and many Londoners like to use clotheslines even if they do possess driers.

We looked long and hard to find a house with a drier, but as it turns out we find ourselves using a clothesline more often than not. The only difference is, we would never dream of hanging our clothes out in the balcony. It rains all the time. :PKarthiknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135643188634165782.post-20147906379895962172011-08-11T12:45:26.514-07:002011-08-11T12:45:26.514-07:00Apart from clothesline, another "not-so-yuppi...Apart from clothesline, another "not-so-yuppie" thing that may hurt home values in Mumbai is the greyish rusty metal grills that they put on everything where Air can seep through ... the balcony, the door, the windows, even the small bathroom window.

Imagine the multiplying impact when the buyer sees the grills, and the clothesline, in the middle of a cloudy day in the monsoon seasonJayeshnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135643188634165782.post-27158604005131330122011-08-11T12:14:30.394-07:002011-08-11T12:14:30.394-07:00I actually have a clothesline in my backyard here ...I actually have a clothesline in my backyard here in the US. Yes, I do have a backyard so none other than my family sees it, but I agree with your wife in using the energy that's out there. I routinely air dry my swim outfits n towels, etc rather than running the dryer.

The problem my parents face where they live is something different. The clotheslines are outside the balcony (covered area), so if the people living above them hang dripping clothes, then all that water falls on our clothes. During monsoons and winter, the laundry takes a while to dry, and this is an issue. Also no one likes other people's laundry water to drop on theirs. It's a saga that goes on but people just deal with it.

I hope the clothesline doesn't go away. I like how our Indian lifestyle is in so many ways....and the good parts don't need to change.Shachihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05008713817905152623noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135643188634165782.post-38070751188918682152011-08-11T11:31:57.914-07:002011-08-11T11:31:57.914-07:00it is amusing to see this debate , i used to think...it is amusing to see this debate , i used to think that for all the hot air abt environmental consciousness in the west their refusal to apply perfectly easy & common sense third world solutions to energy conservation was such hypocrisy...now it seems we have become affluent enough to go the other way :)ribhunoreply@blogger.com
